Community HEalth Centers (CHC)
Alabama Medical Education Consortium – Troy, Alabama
The Alabama Medical Education Consortium’s vision is “To Enhance the Health and Well-Being of the People of Alabama.” Their understanding of the specific healthcare needs in the surrounding communities allows them to be a leader in addressing the need for healers in the medically-underserved regions of Alabama and the South.
The Alabama Medical Education Consortium’s (AMEC) coordination of training experiences allows students to become familiar with rural and under-served communities, providers, hospitals and community health centers. Addressing the regional need for more primary care physicians and dentists coincides with AMEC’s mission to be a foundation for osteopathic medicine.
The education program at AMEC is affiliated with 20 undergraduate universities for the recruitment of applicants into osteopathic medical education and with eight osteopathic medical schools for whom AMEC coordinates clinical training. The AMEC classroom for A. T. Still University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) students is centrally located in Alabama at the Troy University campus. Students are immersed in patient interaction early in their curriculum while continuing to study basic and clinical sciences.
AMEC is addressing the need for more primary care physicians in Alabama and Southern communities. Their collaboration with universities and medical schools demonstrates their unwavering commitment to serving needy communities in the Southern United States.
